YOUR CHILD'S DENTAL HEALTH
Key Milestones Every Parent
should know
As a proud supporter of Camberwell Primary School, we've created this comprehensive guide below to help your family navigate your child's dental development during the primary school years.
From those first precious smiles to confident grins before starting school, each stage brings unique needs and opportunities to build healthy habits that last a lifetime.

01
Preschool Preparation
(3-6 years)
Between ages 3-6, your child's smile goes through significant changes. Some kids may start
to lose their first tooth!
First adult teeth begin to appear, jaws and bites are
developing, and kids are becoming more independent with their brushing.
Small daily habits
now set the stage for confident, healthy smiles into adulthood.

Toothbrush: Kids-sized toothbrush
Toothpaste: Low-fluoride, pea-sized amount
Supervision: Supervised brushing, with parents finishing the job

Supporting Healthy Teeth for Life
-
Brush twice a day and floss once daily
-
Offer water after meals and snacks to help remove sugar from teeth that can cause
decay -
Limit sugary foods and sticky treats to meal times
-
Protect growing smiles during sports with custom-fitted mouthguards
-
Every small habit helps create a stronger, healthier smile for life
How to Brush and Care for Growing Teeth
-
Brush twice a day with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
-
Use small, gentle circles across all surfaces of the teeth
-
Start teaching self-flossing - adults should still assist at night until about 8-10 years
old
02
Building Independence
(6 - 12 years old)
Between ages 6-12, your child's smile continues developing. This is the transition phase
where they will lose 20 teeth in total.
Your dentist will need to monitor that all teeth are
developing and coming through properly, sometimes they may request for an x-ray to check
this.
Adult teeth are settling in, and children are gaining more independence with their oral
care routines, though they still need guidance and supervision.

Toothbrush: Appropriately sized toothbrush
Toothpaste: Standard fluoride toothpaste
Supervision: Child brushes, parent checks nightly

Tips for Parents: How to Help Your Child Love Dental Visits
We recommend bringing your child to the dentist when their first tooth appears. Early visits help them get comfortable and confident with seeing the dentist, setting them up for a lifetime of positive dental experiences. We can also provide helpful information on how to care for these first teeth. At Ashburton Family Dental, we’re proud to support this journey by offering free check-ups for kids under 4.
The length of time between your visits will be tailored to your dental requirements based on your dentists review and guidance. Regular visits allow us to spot and address issues early, helping you maintain a healthy, long-lasting smile. We believe in preventing issues rather than fixing them for the best dental health. and preservation of your natural teeth.
Turn brushing and flossing into a game or family activity. Singing songs, using colorful toothbrushes, or setting rewards can make oral care something kids look forward to.
Absolutely! We offer family appointments to make it easier for everyone to get the care they need in one visit. These appointments also allow adults to positively role model the dental visit experience, helping kids feel comfortable and confident about dental care. This lays the foundation for a lifetime of healthy dental habits and ensures dental visits become a natural part of their life.
